Happy Decemberween!

Sat Dec 22, 2007, 2:49 PM
I observe Christmas, but don't like to "celebrate" it. Instead, I'm celebrating Decemberween! Hurray!

I have a new drawing up. I'm trying to teach myself anatomy, so there's partial (non-explicit) nudity. It's a work-in-progress, the final will be fully clothed with the character's wardrobe from my sci-fi story.

Comments on this new one are encouraged. I like to learn from mistakes.

Long time, no draw!

Whew, I was way overdue for some drawing. Very therapeutic once I sat down and started doing some again.

This one is another sci-fi character from my story, but I decided for a more casual look instead of a military uniform. She's a pilot, but this picture is from before her military career began.

I love this breakthrough

I was right. Getting a good poser program made all the difference. After making some good reference renders, I made today's upload in about 6 hours. I want to spend about another 12-16 hours cleaning it up and detailing it more.

Poses and proportions

Wed Aug 22, 2007, 9:08 PM
I'm sure most people on here know how hard it is to get things proportionate. It sucks.

If I do a face right and get it perfect, the neck is too small. Or the arms are too low, or uneven, or the legs are too long, or something it missing from the flow.

I'm not a perfectionist by any means, but I do not like ugly things. I've had to borrow other people's work to get an idea of how proportions work. I decided to buy a 3d posing program to avoid this problem in the future.
(it's nice not being a "starving artist")

Major breakthrough on this last piece. It borrowed heavily on the pose and even some of the wardrobe, but I was able to develop a shading style I'm really happy with. I'm hoping to refine it enough eliminate dark lines altogether, and only use shading to define borders. We don't go walking around with black outlines, so why should my drawings?
On the other hand, I do like outlines for some things, so I'll be balancing it out somehow...

Eight months dry, then five hours to finish

Thu Aug 16, 2007, 6:58 AM
Well, I didn't touch a pencil for eight months, but I've been wanting to draw again. Computers have always been kinder to me than the pen, so I looked into getting Adobe Illustrator...$600? No thanks. After some research, I discovered "Inkscape", an open source alternative. It runs on Windows, Mac and Linux, so I'm able to use it on both my laptop (WinXP), and my desktop (Ubuntu Linux 7)

After toying around with it for a while, I figured out what I was doing, and managed to complete the latest entry, a character titled "Ilska Myrd," after about five hours. I could have done it in about 3, but 2 hours were spent learning how to use Inkscape.
